Kongsberg GeoAcoustics Sidescan Sonar package for new Indian Survey Vessel

Sophisticated hydro package part of a comprehensive delivery from KONGSBERG

Kongsberg GeoAcoustics recently delivered a full side-scan sonar package to Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd, Korea, for installation on a new-build survey vessel that will enter operation for the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in 2013. As part of a comprehensive delivery from Kongsberg Maritime, the Kongsberg GeoAcoustics package includes an advanced 2094D Side Scan Sonar plus winch, complete acquisition and processing software and all required peripherals for seabed sonar surveys.

The Marine and Coastal Survey Division of GSI already has an ocean-going research vessel and two coastal launches carrying out seabed surveys within Indian Territorial Waters and the Exclusive Economic Zone. The new vessel will be a welcome addition to the fleet, enabling 100 or so marine geologists to survey in deeper waters using modern state of the art geological and geophysical sensors and equipment. Hydrocarbons and deep sea hydrothermal deposits are two resources being targeted for further investigation.

Ten geologists from GSI underwent intensive training on the 2094D Side Scan Sonar system in July 2012. From theory to practical application in hardware and software, a detailed programme of training was delivered by the Kongsberg GeoAcoustics team. Feedback from senior members of the group was positive, with the knowledge and experience of the Kongsberg GeoAcoustics Great Yarmouth, UK, team particularly valued.

Kongsberg GeoAcoustics is a world-class manufacturer and supplier of sonar, sub-bottom profiler and swath bathymetry systems, acting as a one stop shop for customer marine survey systems and a key part of Kongsberg Maritime’s Full Picture delivery approach, which enables delivery of all a vessel’s key systems, including navigation, automation and hydroacoustic, from a single supplier.
