The DDS 9000 systems provide improved performance over earlier diver detection systems through the use of wide-band signal processing, improved signal-to-noise ratios using pulse compression (chirp) and electronic vertical beam steering. Developments in sonar hardware have been matched by the development of the significantly advanced DDS Processor and DEFENDER III software for signal processing, detection, tracking and classification, fusion and display. The DDS 9000 also meets the US Department of Homeland Security's cost requirement per foot of protected shoreline and is suited to both military and civilian applications.

Proven

With over fifty systems delivered KONGSBERG has demonstrated the effectiveness and reliability of our diver detection systems worldwide. Systems are in use with the US Navy, US Coast Guard Service, and other military and government agencies. Extensive testing and field trials with actual divers have validated performance of the DDS 9000 and DEFENDER III systems.

Reliable

Combined hardware and software development has taken KONGSBERG underwater surveillance systems to higher levels of capability and reliability. The current DDS 9000™ Diver Detection Sonar is based on the tried and proven SM 2000 sonar design has evolved into a "MOTS" or militarized off the shelf version based on the requirements of our military customers. Extensive verification testing includes underwater shock testing to military requirements.

On the computer hardware side, the use of blade server processing hardware improves reliability and serviceability, reducing downtime and simplifying upgrades. A ruggedized laptop serves as the operator console, providing a simple, reliable human machine interface (HMI).

This development also signals a move from Windows™ based PCs to LINUX based open architecture using servers. The advantages to military clients are a solid development history or "pedigree" and proven hardware effectiveness and reliability. LINUX provides a secure, low-maintenance, reliable, predictable and reproducible environment. Navies will be able to maintain programs more easily over operational lifetimes with the architecture of DEFENDER III™.

In daily operations, automatic track classification and filtering keep the false alarm rate to a minimum. Updated electronics have been extensively tested to ensure reliable operation. All materials used in construction of the DDS 9000 series are carefully selected for their corrosion-resistant properties. Proper functioning is assured through a built-in self test function (BIST).

DEFENDER III™ also provides a far higher level of operator support and analysis capability than seen on earlier generation systems. Support systems include Sonar Performance Analysis, and System Status. Individual track data can be examined in greater detail to aid in confirmation or elimination of targets as potential threats. The System Status window reports overall conditions and text descriptions for different parts of the system. Different access levels are provided for the control of system parameters. Sonar Performance Analysis enables operators to maximize sonar detection capability by modeling performance under current environmental conditions. The effect of altering settings to cope with changing environmental conditions can be evaluated and then implemented. Interoperability is aided by the use of NATO STANAG icons.

Applications include fixed systems for port security and mobile systems where manoeuvrability is important. The systems multi-mission capability makes it easily interchangeable from one type of deployment to another. With sonar heads weighing less than 90 kg (200 pounds) it is light enough to be deployed by a small crew in less than one hour. The DDS 9000 Series of Multibeam Diver Detection sonar meets the requirements for coverage in the azimuth of either 200° or 360°. Either version can be lowered by a winch cable, tripod mounted in a fixed position, or used in mobile and temporary deployments.

The approach is truly scalable from mobile diver detection systems to coastal surveillance. Kongsberg’s approach to data processing supports a broad network-centric approach to C4ISR systems by making data available at different levels. Kongsberg can configure systems for different information requirements and bandwidth capabilities. In the case of monostatic systems, DEFENDER III™ will output target data to central command and control systems or compatible equipment. Output from multiple sonar heads in multistatic systems can be combined into a Common Operating Picture or COP. On a larger scale, Kongsberg Defense Systems MSI C-Scope™ systems provide the full range of data import and export options, including true data fusion capability, assessing and combining data from different sensor types before uploading to the network. DDS systems are readily integrated into C2 /C4ISR systems.
