Create translation project in SDL Trados Studio 2014

Creating a new translation project

This procedure explains how to create a new translation project in the TRADOS Studio translation program. You only need to do this once.

  1. On your harddisk, create an empty folder c:\Trados.
  2. Start the "SDL Trados Studio" program.
  3. In the bottom left corner of the screen, click Welcome.
  4. On the Home page, click New project.
  5. Observe that the wizard starts.
  6. Page 1 Project type: Choose default project, and click Next.
  7. Page 2 Project details:
    1. Name: Type "KM"
    2. Location: Use the new folder c:\Trados on your hard disk.
    3. Click to enable "Allow source editing for supported file types".
    4. Click Next.
  8. Page 3 Project languages:
    1. Source Language: Select "English (United Kingdom)"
    2. Target Languages: Select the language you will translate to, and click Add to move it to the right column.

      Choose only one target language!

    3. Click Next.

    If you wish to use the Trados program to translate to more than one target languages, make one project for each language.

  9. Page 4 Project Files:
    1. Click Add Files, and choose one single file from your hard disk. This can be any text file.
    2. Click Next.
  10. Page 5 Translation Memory and Automated Translation:
    1. In the first dialog box, click Create → New file-based translation memory
    2. Name: Type the language you are translating to, for example "Spanish" or "French"
    3. Location: Use the new folder c:\Trados on your hard disk.
    4. Verify that the correct languages are shown.
    5. Enable character based concordance search: Click to enable.
    6. Click Next.
    7. In the second dialog box, use defaults, and click Next.
    8. In the third dialog box, use defaults, and click Finish.
    9. In the fourth dialog box, wait while the translation memory is created, then click Close.
    10. Back in the wizard, observe that the translation memory is shown, then click Next.
  11. Page 6 Termbases: Use default settings, and click Next.
  12. Page 7 SDL PerfectMatch: Use default settings, and click Next.
  13. Page 8 Project preparation:
    1. For Task Sequence, select "Prepare" from the list provided.
    2. Click Next.
  14. Page 9 Batch processing settings:
    1. On the left side, click Analyze Files.
    2. Use default values.
    3. On the left side, click Project Translation Memories.
    4. Use default values.
    5. On the left side, click Pre-Translate Files.
    6. Use default values.
    7. On the left side, click Fuzzy Bands.
    8. Use default values.
    9. Click Next.
  15. Page 10 Project Summary: Click Finish to create the project.
  16. Page 11 Preparing Project: Allow the project creation to finalize, then click Close.
