Automation refit in just seven days

24. March 2004

The 20.000 ton passenger/car ferry M/S Jupiter built in 1975 has had a substantial refit in just seven days. The refit consists of a new AutoChief 7 propulsion control system interfaced to the existing DataChief C20 machinery automation system, a Maritime Black Box MBB voyage data recorder, and a safety system for each of the four main engines.

The M/S Jupiter was the first ship to install a DataChief C20 system five years ago, and we are pleased they wanted us for this new refit. The ship is powered by four HM Pielstick medium speed V12 engines with dual axel generators and clutch logic providing 24.000 horsepower. Wartsila auxiliary engines supply an additional 1700 horsepower each. To control these, the DataChief system has 1400 interfaces, and the AutoChief 7 works with 300 interfaces and complex software to handle the control logic. The voyage data recorder is interfaced to the radars, GPS, gyro, speed log, four microphones and a VHF system.
